The state allowed gambling casinos to operate in order to raise money for the disabled and the elderly. 1978 was a landmark year for the state of New Jersey. That was the year when the first casino opened in New Jersey at Atlantic City. The distinction of being the first casino in New Jersey goes to the Resorts International Casino. The New Jersey Senate was the pioneer body to pass S490, it legalizes certain forms of online gambling, including slots, poker, and casino game. However, it excluded sports betting. Online gambling was later legalized in New Jersey when Governor Chris Christie signed Assembly Bill A2578 back on February 26, 2013. New Jersey, home to Atlantic City, has relatively permissive gambling laws, which permit licensed casinos and horse race wagering. One of the main gambling-based offenses in New Jersey is operating a casino or other gambling institution without a state permit.

Problem Gambling / Self Exclusion

For most people, a visit to a casino is fun. They try their luck, wager responsibly, have a good time and understand that gambling is a form of entertainment. They enjoy the excitement of the casino, the fine restaurants, the shows and the other amentities found in casino hotels.
For a small number of people, however, gambling isn't fun. Problem gambling includes what is often called compulsive gambling and pathological gambling. It refers to a condition where people are, to some degree, addicted to gambling. While the results of a gambling addiction can be devastating, there is help available for those people who need it.
New Jersey provides funding for education and treatment programs for people with a gambling problem.

New Jersey Casino Gambling Self-Exclusion Program

To sign up for the New Jersey Casino Gambling Self-Exclusion Program, go to the offices of the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement at either of the following locations:

New Jersey Poker. There are six high-profile poker rooms in New Jersey. All of them are located in Atlantic City. The largest two are operated by Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa (85 tables) and Harrah’s Atlantic City (40 tables), while the remaining four are run by Bally’s (20 tables), Tropicana (18 tables), Golden Nugget (10 tables), and Ocean Resort Casino (8 tables). Welcome to the Center for Gambling Studies (CGS) at Rutgers School of Social Work. Founded in 2007, CGS is the only gambling studies center in a school of social work and one of a few such centers in the U.S.

The Casino Control Act (N.J.S.A. 5:12-71) also provides for the establishment of a list of persons who are to be excluded or ejected from any licensed casino in New Jersey, such as career or professional offenders, cheats or criminal offenders, which is not to be confused with Self-Exclusion.
